"Icons" University Project

  • Eleasha Addicott

During my final year at Norwich University of the Arts, I worked on a project called "Icons". The idea stemmed from my struggle with identity and what it meant to be a woman when I grew up in a heavily Christian family. This concept was inspired by my desire to change the perception of women in religious settings by portraying them both united and empowered, rather than frail and in need of a man. I took traditional elements, such as gold leaf, and sometimes working with triptychs, and applied this to modern or heavenly scenarios to see how I could manipulate the viewer's perception. This project is something I'm still continuing with, particularly reflecting upon the strength, power and beauty of women, and embodying this spirit in my practice.
