INSTALLATION - Shape of Light

The Shape of Light was a first-time collaboration between artists Zanny Mellor and Jessica Rayner, taking place beneath St John church in Bethnal Green, London in 2018. During this two week residency the artists responded to the architecture of the crypt, exploring the opposites of darkness and light, and aimed to establish a sensually challenging environment for visitors. Layering translucent materials and stage lighting within the 4 metre depth of the underground space, an immersive installation emerged reminiscent of an aperture or void. Visitors navigated their way through a dark tunnel towards the glowing installation at the end. Moving your body around installation allowed for different geometric compositions to realise themselves in your vision. The period of experimentation enabled the artists to expand their practices through new materials and territories, posing questions about our perceptual understanding of light and our sense of immediate environment. www.zannymellor.com www.jessicarayner.com
