Kathy Prendergast | Strata

  • Adam Cooper

Hand-coloured maps by contemporary artist, Kathy Prendergast, and teaching maps by female geography students from Bedford College (now Royal Holloway, University of London) are brought together in this exhibition. These maps encourage the viewer to look beyond the surface and think about what maps can tell us about the wider world and the society that has produced them.

2019 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of geologist, William ‘Strata’ Smith (1769 – 1839). The first geological map of England, Wales and Scotland that he produced in 1815, accompanies the exhibition.

Part of the 2019 Yorkshire Fossil Festival, curated by Invisible Dust for Scarborough Museums Trust, with support from Arts Council England.
