Lionsgate Entertainment World, an indoor theme park with attractions based on Hollywood's most successful movie franchise, opened on Hengchin Island next to Macau on Wednesday.

It is part of the 5.45 billion yuan (US$792 million) Novotown Phase I project, a major development focused on non-game tourism. Hengchen is one of mainland China's closest territories to Macau's gambling hub. Hong Kong's Leysen Group is the primary developer of the Novotown initiative.

According to a press release released on Wednesday on behalf of Lionsgate Entertainment World, one of the theme park attractions focuses on Macau. "Macao Night Market" brings Macau's stunning streets to Hengchin," it said.

The six Hollywood film franchises featured in the facility's attractions are The Hunger Games, The Twilight Saga, The Divergent Series, Now You See Me, The Escape Plan, and the Gods of Egypt.

The tickets for adults during the peak season of the new facility cost 280 yuan, about $41 U.S. dollars.

Lionsgate – full name Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation – is a major Hollywood film and entertainment company.

In April, Zheng Wai Tong, deputy director of the Macau government's tourism agency, told Macau media that he believed Heng Chin's goal of developing it as a tourist island would complement Macau's tourism proposals, namely casino resorts and historical heritage.

That month, China's State Council announced that it had approved a plan to make Hengchin an "island for international leisure and tourism."

It said the plan aims to improve transport connectivity between Hung-chien, Macau and Hong Kong by next year.

Voices from the Macau gaming industry suggested that easing the border formalities between Hengchin and Macau should be encouraged to boost tourism trade between the two regions.

Hengqin, also known as the Hengqin New Area, is part of the pilot free trade zone in Guangdong Province in mainland China, which aims to attract inward investment from abroad as well as from the local area.

Chinese officials who attended the launch of Lionsgate Entertainment World on Wednesday included the mayor of neighboring mainland Macau city Zhuhai, Yao Sheng, and Hwang Doo-an Lian, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau secretariat in Guangdong province.

Selena Magill, general manager of Lionsgate Entertainment World, noted in the announcement that the bid aims to "contribute as much as possible to the development of tourism infrastructure in Hungary and Zhuhai."

Yang Chuan, director of the Hengchen New Area Administrative Committee, also attended the inauguration ceremony.

Wednesday's press release referred to the Chinese central government's plans to connect the economies of Macau, Hong Kong, and major cities in Guangdong.
