Luke Stephenson, born in Darlington, UK, studied Photography at Blackpool & Flyde College, graduating in 2005.
Life in Britain and the British psyche are at the core of Stephenson’s work. Often humorous in their approach, his series of images ranges from prize budgerigars, to the iconic 99 icecream, to the Clown Egg Register. Whether his subjects are animate or inanimate, Stephenson creates affectionate portraits, and documents worlds often hidden from the mainstream.
In the year he graduated, he was awarded the Jerwood Photographic Prize, and the following year was selected to showcase his work at the International Festival of Fashion & Photography in Hyeres, France. Stephenson has published two books to date: his first, An Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds, in 2012; and then in 2014, ‘99x99s’, exploring the wonderful world of the ever-popular 99 icecream.
