Malaysian Game Demand Likely Despite Omicron: Analysts by bscnews casinosite
The 2022 business outlook for Malaysia's only casino complex, Resort World Genting (pictured), could be brighter than the Omicron variant infection rate for COVID-19 in Malaysia, Maybank investment bank Bhd said in a note on Wednesday.

It cited consumer activity data from three major casino markets - the U.S., the U.K. and Australia - regarding demand for a range of services amid Omicron.

Maybank said the COVID-19 variant appeared to have a lower mortality rate than its predecessor.

Analysts Samuel Yin Sao Yang said the agency looked at data for sources, particularly retail and recreational activities, including Google's Covid-19 Community Mobility Reports. The data allows a comparison of consumer interest in retail and recreational activities during pre-COVID-19 trading periods and beyond.

"To our positive surprise, the three countries noted that despite the surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant, they were only negatively impacted in a minor way in December 2021."

As of Monday (14 February), Malaysia had recorded 24,340 new COVID-19 cases, the financial agency said, a "six-month high."

"With Malaysia experiencing another surge in new COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant, we ask ourselves whether the Malaysian gaming industry will go through another year of movement control orders, a euphemism for lockdowns, leading to another year of losses or revenue decline," In wrote.

However, he added that a new lockdown seemed unlikely to be implemented due to Omicron in Malaysia, which has reported high COVID-19 vaccination rates.

"As long as the risk of serious health complications is low, we hypothesize that Malaysians still tend to get into the game despite the risk of contracting COVID-19," the analyst said.

Earlier this month, Malaysia's National Recovery Commission proposed opening its borders fully without mandatory quarantine for international travelers from March 1.

Resorts World Genting, which opened a much-anticipated new outdoor theme park this month, was a popular destination for foreign tourists before the COVID-19 pandemic, investment analysts said.

The property is a flagship asset of Genting Malaysia Bhd, which also operates casino operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Egypt and the Bahamas.

Throughout the third quarter of last year, Resort World Genting, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, was closed due to COVID-19 measures. Resort World Genting only opened on Sept. 30 after temporarily closing on June 1.
