Inspired by Claude Cahun’s black and white self-portraits, this short film is a conglomeration of surrealist thoughts and ideas concerning the construction and fluidity of identity, the boundaries and limitations of the body, and the strangeness of everyday objects. How does the application of make-up, for instance, simultaneously become a powerful act of autonomous self-creation, and an absurd task involving strange tools and abstract chemicals? The film explores the moments in-between states of being – at which point does a person stop being one thing and transform into another? [Disclaimer: Some of the footage in this film is not my own - I have used footage available from youtube for some parts of the montage.]
