Mind the food

  • Isa Farfan
A tool to reduce food waste, eat more healthily and connect with others
The initial idea for Mind the Food came inspired for the proposal for the 2018 SIGCHI Design brief: It has to create a solution for a global problem (as is food waste) and propose a solution by enganging communities.
The idea for this solution came from the following insights:
70% of food at home is wasted because it isn't eaten before it reaches its expiry date
People who live alone produce up to 50% more avoidable food waste on average
Busy lives in a fast-paced city like London make it harder to eat healthy homemade meals
The application acts as a stock control system for the user's kitchen. After they've recorded what produce they have, the application will suggest healthy, easy to make recipes. The users can set goals and the application will track their progress and suggest recipes that help the users achieve them.
The application also contains a social section where users can be part of a leader board, upload recipes, as well as rate and comment on other peoples' recipes.
User Flows
The main goal for users is to gain points related not only to avoiding their domestic food waste but also being able to track any goals they can have related to their eating habits.
Every interaction with the application generates points which gives the user the feeling of constant progress
Here we can appreciate a more detailed flowchart of the use of the Kitchen area and how the user would add or consume items from the stock
Wireframes were created to be able to test the prototype with users.
The prototypes passed through an heuristic evaluation, a presential user test were users had to fullfill a series of tasks and a remote first click test.
Iterations to the designs were implemented
