Mono No Aware

Conveying a chosen folklore to an audience: 'Mono No Aware' - appreciation of the transience of things and its beauty.

I decided to convey the essence of this folklore through photography, a physical 3D piece, and an interactive poster design. I started by document the process of a leaf decaying over time. I then took this process and developed it further by printing words such as 'beauty' 'ephemeral' 'transient' etc onto flowers and leaves and documented the effect as they dried out and died. I also produced a poster with 'Mono No Aware' printed in Japanese in the centre. The text was fixed onto the paper, however along the top were water soluble paints which dissolved and dripped down the sheet. This created an ephemeral display of transience and beauty for viewers to experience and take part in.
