Need & Error (2016)

If both “Capitalism” and environmentalism claim to provide for ‘basic’ (human) needs, then how come we currently stand at a precipice, one which is precipitating our own ‘premature’ end? Are not the two incompatible? One preaches an ideology of infinity, whilst the other urging for an urgent implementation of a concern for finitude. No limit growth, insatiable consumption and the cloning of soon to be obsolete products stands in dialectic relationship to an ethic-politics of conservation. Although this oppositional arrangement is positively productive, it conceals a latent contradiction, a double bind, an aporia yielding a negative; its reverse folding tension. A video commissioned for Teststrip Films accompanied by a narrated dialogue. 20 artists were invited to reflect A. Maslow’s ‘Pyramid of Needs’ and D.Alighieri’s ‘Inferno’. To ask questions on our contemporary human conditions, our needs as humans and our survival. This video uses montage of original and found footage.
