OPAL

  • Amelia Haines

As a very personal project I undertook an exploration of jewellery and what it's sentimentally means to people. I took photographs over a few months and interviewed people who were involved in jewellery, including craftspeople, wearers or admirers. For the final outcome I collated all my research and made three books entitled Craft, Jewels and People. This was a research based project in which I took around 2000 photos and recorded hours worth of audio interviews. The project as a whole was called OPAL: an acronym for all my sibling’s first initials and a prominent feature of the project. The concept of the book design was to link it back to the precious aspects of jewellery, so I made a bespoke box to keep the three books in.
