OPEN WEATHER Project ☁️

  • Sofia Caferri

“In a feminist mode, we ask: who or what gains power from satellite imagery, radio technology, and meteorological data?” Co-led by Sasha Engelmann and Sophie Dyer, the open weather project is a hybrid citizen science and art collaboration probing the relationships between bodies, atmospheres, and weather systems using DIY community tools. Open weather encompasses a series of how-to guides, critical frameworks, and public workshops on the reception of satellite images using free or inexpensive amateur radio technologies. This project was designed to make it possible for anyone with no background knowledge of radio or engineering, to set up their own satellite ground station and receive meteorological data from polar-orbiting satellites. The open-weather wiki page on Public Lab was launched in June 2020 and featured the DIY Satellite Ground Station guide. Learn more: https://open-weather.community/
