Paul was brought up by foster families and he was finally adopted when he was nine. He had been bullied at school and later in the army, where he spent four years serving in conflict zones. He resigned to train as a Clown. Today Paul lives in Stroud, he performs in children parties and occasionally takes on labour jobs. He has got a five year-old son.
I have been photographing Paul, fascinated by his fantastic world and controversial personality. He is driven by an unfulfilled ambition to become a famous performer, which blurs the line between reality and fantasy. There lies an undercurrent sadness magnified by his desire to attract attention. Paul has assumed this persona to function within his environment; as if being a Clown works as an alibi to act to the extreme and to seek adventure.
