“I love challenging how we see ourselves,” says artist and filmmaker Jenn Nkiru. “I like to experiment and play with form and expectations.” Ideas of identity lie at the heart of much of her work, including recent film REBIRTH IS NECESSARY – produced by Iconoclast London and commissioned for NOWNESS’ Black Star series, exploring the future of the black experience. The ten-minute long video is described by Nkiru as a “summation of all my loaded feelings and questions over the last few years. It’s where I got to reconcile my worlds: the material and the spiritual, the human and divine. I describe the film as jazz.”
