Re-imagining Lichtenstein

  • Nasima A
I've been drawn to pop art for its colourful, comic and sassy appeal. I was inspired by another artist called Hatecopy whose work has been described as a marriage between Roy Lichtenstein's comics and the melodramic world of South Asian soap operas.
I wanted to create my own version; geared towards individuals whose lifestyles matched my own. Muslim women, particulalry those who wear headscarves (hijabs).
I've enjoyed recreating these classic pop art damsels and twisting them into my own narative. My most popular recreation is of the 'OMG I'M SO RETRO' piece which I've produced into stickers, art prints and enamel pins.
