Redesign: The Great Gatsby

  • Emma Clare Carroll

The Great Gatsby has been redesigned and is set as a film in present time in Scotland. My designs are inspired by the Egyptian riches: jewellery, statues, wall tablets, paintings and drawings. These have incorporated the theme of Art Decoratifs. Art Deco has worked well with the other themes such as the 1920s and Egyptian Art due to the shapes, patterns and designs. I have researched, analysed texts and visited places of interest to inform my work. I have also put a 1920s fashion twist on my designs from today’s trends. I researched current designers and investigated the latest styles. Combining ideas from Tutankhamun’s treasures with inspiration of the 1920s fashion and today’s fashion has allowed me to experiment with shapes and structure, textiles, millinery and accessories. My designs, influenced by Egyptian Art, link to the 1920s. Character: Daisy Buchanan The model is wearing a short sleeved fitted panelled dress. It has a v-neckline with beautiful beaded embellishments. The A-symmetric handkerchief 1920s draped waterfall skirt flows to the ankle. Blush and rose gold silks add luxury and allow full movement in the skirt. The long sleeved faux fur cuffed kimono is made from transparent white silk organza. Its long style sits elegantly over the dress without concealing it completely. The structured look is in contrast with the dress. Egyptian symbols are Digitally Embroidered in light pink and silver threads onto the centre fronts and centre backs. The headscarf is beaded A-symmetrically to coordinate with the skirt. This is an expression of sheer luxury, artistry and glamour. Daisy Buchanan is dressed for the party with Gatsby.
