SAVE THE SPARROWS

  • Lorna Boyle
The aim for this project was to design an object that would benefit the area of Jacob’s Island. Inspired by the Downings Road Moorings in the area who had made a home for nature on their boats I decided to design a DIY bird house that could be used by the land residents of the area. The end product was ‘The House Sparrow Survival Kit’. The kit is made up of:

DIY/self-assemble bird house (a laser cut plywood bird house, it’s shape and size specific to the house sparrow, the most endangered bird in the area)

House Sparrow Information Booklet (The booklet gives you all the information you need to know about the house sparrow, as well as how to put together and erect your bird house. The booklet is serrated and so can be easily shredded by hand and used to provide a nest/bedding to go inside the bird house)

House Sparrow Snack Pouch (also specific to the house sparrows' needs)

Rope (to help erect your bird house)

As part of the project I also created a website and hash-tag so that users could get more information about the ‘Save the Sparrows Campaign’ and share their sparrow projects.
