Secret 7

For this project I was tasked with creating a vinyl record sleeve design which reflected a songs essence, but at the same time did not reveal the artist who created it. For my design I chose the Jimi Hendrix song, ‘Castles Made Of Sand’. The design of this image is influenced both by the lyrics/title of the song, and the artist Jimi Hendrix’s personal history. I decided to take this approach as the Secret 7 exhibition was sponsoring the MIND charity in 2018, and I wanted to create a more personalised image which perhaps also represents this organization. I highlighted certain aspects such as the colour blue, which represents Hendrix’s short career in the US Navy’s Airborne division during the Vietnam war. The blue colour I found was also associated with depression, often depicted in the expression ‘feeling blue’. The abstract shapes around the boarders, along with the small cut out workmen appearing to be building an invisible structure, attempt to evoke the frequently stigmatised perception of mental illness.
