SWITCH OFF

  • Lucy Ilsley
This project seeked to explore anxiety and promote the awareness of mental health. Lucy wanted this project to be personal and reach out to others who suffer as she has with anxiety. It is something that affects many people's wellbeing and is often stigmatised. Her main aim was to produce textile samples for fashion and fashion accessories that can help the wearer get through the day feeling happy and positive. The resulting pieces are distracting and provide reassurance. She believes this has been achieved through material choices, surface texture and applying a playful colour palette. Primary research has predominantly been taken from a collection of gathered objects that all make people feel good and relaxed. The selection is random and odd but inspiring, from feather dusters to word search puzzles. Secondary research has been gathered through many designers and artists such as Nick Cave, Fred Butler and Maurizio Anzeri. Her samples explore combinations of techniques and processes including laser cutting, CAD embroidery and UV printing. Lucy worked with a variety of materials but predominantly leather due to its pliability and luxurious quality. The title of the project, ‘Switch Off’ was chosen to bring about the idea that sometimes we need a quick escape from reality in order to re-gather our thoughts and return with a more positive mind set.
