The Spectrum

  • Emily Knowles

The Spectrum, also known as ‘Emotions with Emojis”, is a learning resource for children with autism that uses their preferred colour palette to increase concentration in learning about emotions. These booklets come in a variety of colours catering to the child’s wants and needs. Each booklet within the set is either a lighter or darker hue of that colour to show the positive and negative emotions. (Positive being a lighter shade and negative being darker). Stickers are also provided within the packs to increase interactivity as children with autism have a shorter than average attention span. After researching into the learning process in children with autism, I found that a key aspect of learning that they struggled with the most, is understanding emotions. They have no enthusiasm for the subject as it does not suit their own interests. However, I found that these children almost always have a colour preference. By combining this enthusiasm for colour and the much needed education for learning emotions, I created an educational resource that is both fun and helpful.
