The Stranger in the Field

  • Polly Garnett
Since its introduction in the 13th century, the rabbit population of the United Kingdom has risen to over 37.5 million in the wild. Under the Pests Act of 1954, the whole of England and Wales has been declared a rabbit clearance area.
The Stranger in the Field examines the effects of the domestication of the rabbit as a means of visualizing the consequences of the imposition of man upon nature. It looks at direct cultural and scientific evidence to examine the continual degradation of an animal's natural characteristics; for the interest and maintained dominance of humans.
