For five deliriously mid-paced years, I've been writing the sleeve notes and release promo copy for Too Slow to Disco - a series of wonderful AOR compilations. These LPs, curated by DJ Supermarkt in Berlin, are collections of brilliantly over-competent near misses, songs that should have been hits had their writers not imploded on the launch pad, usually in a cloud of narcotics, booze or poor relationship choices. We decided right from the start that the style should be knowing and playful, imitating 70s novels and evoking an atmosphere of blissed-out, Pacific Ocean bohemians. I write little vignettes to set the scene, before we dive into the musical delights featured on the records. It is, needless to say, a delightful project for a copywriter and Steely Dan fan. The series has been a huge hit, one of Rough Trade Records biggest sellers. In 2018 we branched out into Brazilian AOR and the forthcoming 2019 edition even relocates the action to contemporary France. More: tooslowtodisco.net
