TRANSITION

  • Vici Watkins
The soft, pink wool not only signifies femininity and the transitional qualities of the child’s blanket, but is also the symbol of a mother’s warmth and protection. The natural light source further underlines this organic and ephemeral bond.

The fragility of the threads, hanging delicately, embodies the status of the relationship, between mother and separated child - neither secured, nor broken.
Freed from its structural constraints, the jumper’s suspended form, like the relationship it signifies, becomes fragmented from its original purpose. Once isolated upon the plinth, removed from social context, renewed and reworked, the sculpted wool becomes a subject of exploration and interrogation, allowing the opportunity for new values and new possibilities to emerge.
