About the Process

The Universiteit van Nederland (UvNL) hired All This to redefine and redesign its new identity. To grasp what UvNL is all about, we examined 10 years' worth of variations in styles, concepts, and forms in close collaboration with the internal team and Studio Yoko.

We came to the conclusion that there was a difference between being an institution and having a platform that was open to everyone. So we came up with the concept "varsity for all".

The original brandmark, a capital U, was our starting point. After some preliminary sketches, we came to the idea that utilizing a lowercase u would help the U become more recognizable and ownable.

We then developed a system that allowed the u to morph. Making it more adaptable over the next ten years by allowing for infinite interpretations. Our approach was to reduce everything to its bare minimum and then build upon that.

When we were done, we wanted something to match the distinctive charm of the brands' original, specially designed U variants, so we created 3D objects and materials to represent all the scientific fields.
We’re currently at a point where we assist UvNL to implement the new brand system in every platform and format.
