VISUAL NOISE: THE NEXT GENERATION EXHIBIT WITH RANKIN

  • Eloïse Atkins
  • RANKIN CREATIVE

The Visual Noise exhibition allowed graduate photography students, whose degree shows were disrupted during the pandemic, the opportunity to display work alongside Rankin. 40 artists were selected from among the prodigious number of applicants, and each winner had been allocated a 6ft x 6ft space at Maryland Studio dedicated to showcasing their images in the two-day exhibition. The chosen artist’s work is inspired by a diverse range of subjects‭ - ‬from personal experience‭, ‬dysphoric approaches to contemporary culture‭, ‬art history‭, ‬and an unabashed love for art and fashion - presented across mixed media from collage to textiles, editorial and film.

Mélange: 'A mixture, or a group of different things or people.' Eloïse Atkins

Through these selected images of portariture, still life and documentary, they help to identify the theme of fusionin culture. The title Mélange perfectly describes who I am, mixed. My father is white British and my mother is black African.

With my Mauritian heritage, I wanted to pay homage to the tiny island that has created opportunities for intercultural encounters and unifies various groups together.

This project helped me to express my identity and experiences in a visual way and use it as a vehicle of communication to the celebration of my mixed identity.
