Within and Without

  • Lucy Hawthorne
On the 19th of May 1989 my Grandfather, William 'Con' Organ was killed in an accident on the road where he and my Grandmother lived. 'Within and Without' is a visual representatition of this event and an exploration of the ubiquitous yet deeply personal experience of loss. By examining my Irish Catholic heritage combined with my rejection of the Catholic Faith, the work explores the complexity of grief, loss and death, utlising photography to confer idolatry on to seemingly unremarkable objects. 'Within and Without' seeks to estalish a personal narrative by piecing together fragments of past and present, fact an fiction, romanticised and real. In order to construct a picture of a man I did not have the opportunity to meet. Collecting evidence in the form of these unremarkable relics, as a means to understand the shape of the void his death has left behind.
