About me
I'm passionate about creating beautiful, usable experiences. I love technology and enjoy translating it to others. I've lead design projects for Skype, Microsoft, Shazam, Argos, Canonical, and Blinkbox Video on Demand through the full lifecycle of design and development: from user research, requirements gathering, to design concepts, visual polish, and development.
Projects
  • UBUNTU PHONE CALENDAR
UBUNTU PHONE CALENDARUbuntu needed essential core apps for their phone to allow users to start using their phone straight away. As design lead for the core apps project, I was directly responsible for the design of three of the core apps: Calendar, Clock and Browser. In this project, the calendar required a design that would take it from the initial sketching and concept stages to a finalised version, ready for visual and development. To help me through this, I produced a variety of sketches, paper prototypes and
  • ARGOS
ARGOSWhat would Argos look like today if it started tomorrow from scratch with a powerful market leading design shaped around the customer? Based on business requirements and real user testing, my work focusses on a new proposition free from current technical constraints and legacy systems. And by fitting the design within an easy to use and consistent format accross mobile, tablet and web, our team leads design by inspiring the wider digital teams to build and shape Argos as the digital retail leader. I was asked to focus on responsive web first, given their larger market share on web, extending this through to mobile, and later tablet.
  • SKYPE.COM REDESIGN
SKYPE.COM REDESIGNAs part of the Skype.com team, I produced several final stage prototypes for the new design of the skype.com site. These prototypes were used in both user testing and circulated internally amongst Skype leadership.
  • UBUNTU PHONE BROWSER
UBUNTU PHONE BROWSERUbuntu needed essential core apps for their phone to allow users to start using their phone straight away. As design lead for the core apps project, I was directly responsible for the design of three of the core apps: Calendar, Clock and Browser. Designing a fun and useful different browser with great interactions and powerful tabbing and usability is the biggest challenge. For the browser, I produced a variety of sketches, and quick mocks. I worked with prototypers to bring these designs to life and presented several iterations to Mark Shuttleworth.
  • BLINK BOX KIDS APP
BLINK BOX KIDS APPBlinkbox is an established pay per view video platform. Tesco, Blinkbox’s now previouos owners, were keen to offer a suite of built in apps onboarded onto all their Android Hudl devices. They wanted ‘sticky’ apps that would keep users engaged and encourage them to enjoy their new Hudl devices. As part of this strategy, they wanted to target seamless video streaming audiences. As a proof of concept they asked Blinkbox to look into this for children with their library of children’s content. The seamless video streaming app for children needed to be safe and fun, reassured parents and let children view content as much as possible and navigate without assistance. I concepted several designs using the research and brainstormed ideas with the UI designerI explained the visual direction I was keen to push with and the UI designer explored these furtherUsing the prototype, we perfromed several user tests throughout the life of the project to test out designsI collected user research from Tesco’s wider teams, research on Blinkbox’s typical target demographic, and preexisting examples in the marketI drew up several wireframes to help both the UI designer and the developer to work from. These changed along with the design. As we designed, our work was being coded into our prototype by the developer. I led an agile team with, a UI designer, a developer and a product manager towards an iterative design process, based on user testing carried out by our on site usability researcher. I presented the progress of the app at frequent stages to the executive leadership team to gain their participation.
  • SHAZAM FOR IPAD & ANDROID TABLET
SHAZAM FOR IPAD & ANDROID TABLETAs design lead at Shazam I began a rehaul of the UX and UI design starting out concepts for iPad and Android. The main challenge was defining a new approach for Shazam, moving beyond a simple utility app that identified music for users, and into an app that would be used for both music, TV and advertising as a reference and entertainment app. The Android project was a huge success and has so far been widely reviewed very positively with lots of kind comments from so many lovely users and reviewers.
