Blogs waste of time??? Would writers recommend having a blog or better to put that effort into actual projects??

  • Hey @Tara Maguire, it depends on what you're blogging about, why you're blogging and who your target audience is. I predominantly work with beauty brands, so I do have a blog on my website to help connect me with my ideal clients. I optimise for SEO and write about topics that would be useful for beauty brand owners and experts, and make sure I share the content elsewhere too. It always comes second to my actual paid client work, but in the long run leads to me getting more work and making it easier to pick up that work.

For me, this is a better use of time than writing say...a beauty blog about new launches, trends and news that wouldn't necessarily connect me with my ideal clients. Having said that, if you want to get some practice in or you'd enjoying the writing part, then go for it but set it on a backburner to paid writing work.
  • Hi Tara, I agree with the recommendations here to focus on writing rather than blogging as this is the tool which will decide the toss between you and someone else when it comes to winning work. Once you are more established a blog can e a great way to get your personality accross and differentiate yourself - enabling you to appeal to the right type of customer or project by shwing you have a keen interest in a subject. Also as Cristiane says - make sure you share anything you do write with a LinkedIn post to build an audience. It's only an extra 5 mins to share it once it's up and LinkedIn will be the best place to keep conversation flowing back to your website to see what you've been up to.
  • I’d only write a blog if I had something I really wanted to write about - don’t force it as it’ll show.

Having said that, writing about what you know and sharing it on social is a great way of getting noticed by potential clients / employers.
  • and another thing!

what would make sense would be to establish yourself first -- which, if you haven't famous parents or good connections, might take some time -- and then start a blog. nearly every newspaper and magazine of note employ guest bloggers. they get paid.

by 'establish yourself first', moreover, i don't mean as a 'brand' -- human beings aren't 'brands' (i absolutely can't abide so much that appears on this platform) -- but as a real writer. so get to it!

  • @Christiane Lange Thank you so Christiane for the advice, very much appreciated and I will certainly check that out.
  • there are hundreds of millions of blogs out there, most of them unread, so perhaps it would be better t o put your effort into real writing instead of blogging.

  • I used a blog as well as the article feature on LinkedIn, when I was just starting out, as a way to have writing samples available online. But once I had actual work coming in, I stopped.
Blogs are quite a lot of work, and unless you are focusing in on it with a view to monetize, it strikes me as mostly a waste of time. But others may have a different experience.
What can be useful, I think, is placing guest blogs on established platforms. For example, a guest blog on Stage32 might help boost your script development and editing stream.
