Do you hire freelancers/full-timers? What are your top tips for successful & stand-out job applications?

This is a question that gets asked a lot on The Dots, so I thought it would be a super useful thread to start. Hopefully it’s helpful for anyone currently applying for jobs and wanting to stand out from the crowd! Pop your thoughts below.

  • It would be really great to find out more on this! I'm an MA Illustration student and want to become a freelance Illustrator. Following this thread! :)
  • As I'm a filmmaker, I don't deal with a lot of CVs and application forms. If someone comes recommended by a trusted collaborator, then that is usually a sign I can trust them with the job. This would go mainly for the technical on set jobs like camera, sound, art dept, etc.

However, for more complex tasks like producing or editing, it really helps to see the projects people have worked on and how they compared to the upcoming project I am hiring for. I mainly work in short form content which is quite a varied field so you can be asked to do lots of different tasks on one job!

I have also some limited experience in television which is also a 'who you know' part of the industry but CVs are definitely used here as you are hiring someone for an entire series (rather than a couple of days or a week) and want to know that they have worked on long form storytelling.

Sorry if this doesn't help much but I thought it was worth stating!
  • Anyone remember this guy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jffu-35MdHc&t=117s

He got the job he wanted - writing for Sprite at W+K in New York. But you don't need a big budget to stand out. Most ideas and executions are free - remember these guys? https://twitter.com/veryseriousltd/status/1326184070104092673?s=20

The ad industry went wild - and the team got in all the industry press, making it very easy for anyone looking for a team to hire one because there they were in everything.

So be creative. Show the world what you can do. And get noticed to get work.
  • As a Freelance Illustrator, I’d be very interested to learn more about this in the present job market.
