Does anyone have any advice for asking clients for reviews?

We've worked with a handful of clients through our studio Purple Parasol Animation, but are yet to ask them for reviews.

We're looking for a clear but non-invasive way of requesting feedback. Any ideas?

So far we're using Google Reviews and Clutch.

Thanks!

  • Hi Cheryl,

Whenever we complete a project, we send an off-boarding email to thank the client for their partnership. With this, we ask if they'd like to leave a review as part of our ongoing "feedback" programme. Many take up the opportunity and it has left us with many great testimonials.

We make sure this message is personal and friendly. By making it part of the process, it also feels less direct! We no longer have to think too hard about gaining the reviews, it just happens.

    i hope this helps! :-)
  • @Anna Negrini Thanks Anna, we totally agree there- we're trying to avoid coming off as very corporate so a more personal email does sound like the way to go ☺️
  • @Alessandro Novelli Thanks Allesandro, yeah it would definitely be great to learn more about the client experience overall- good or bad!
  • I keep it personal and politely ask by email at the end of a project.

If the relationship's right, I say something light like "And just like Trip Advisor, can I please ask you to write a review so I can add it to my website?"
  • Hi Cheryl

I often agree for a testimonial from my clients and then help shape it a bit for them.

This means that they edit something that already exists rather than having to create something from scratch.

It saves them time and helps me focus them on key messages.

    Hope that helps.

  • I absolutely second Nikki's advice, I too have found that if you ask clients for a reivew or testimonial in a carefully crafted personalised email at the end of the project, it always works. Making it easy for them by providing the links to Google, FB or whichever platform you use is key.

I also do this: when a new client responds to an email I've sent to them, with a glowing response (usually to some creative work), I take the opportunity in my return email to ask them for permission to use their response as a testimonial on my website. I actually have this templated so I can drop it into my email without any effort. This too has been a very successful approach. Hope that helps!
  • Hi Cheryl, I always send a personalised email to ask for a review after a project has been signed off so I know that the client is happy. I actually have a note in my contract that says I require feedback on projects so people know to expect it once we're finished. It might not be the most efficient way but I've never had somebody refuse so it works for me :)

It depends how you want to feature the feedback as to how it's best to collect it - if Google is best for your business then provide people a link to leave a review there so it's as easy as possible for them!

If you're looking to automate the process more then I think it should still come from an email which looks like you sent it personally as people generally feel more inclined to leave feedback. You could link to a Google Form or something similar to ensure you get more thorough feedback but the key to getting it is to make it easy for the client! Hope that's helpful!
