What is the best experience you've had working in your respective industry and what would your advice be for those pursuing it?

  • Best experience:- Spending nearly 20 years as a freelance and doing what I want on my terms.

Best advice - 2 things 1) Be easy to do business with 2) Trust your skills
  • Breakthrough moments when you crack a communications brief.

It often happens at the connection point of the seemingly unrelated.

    Q. What do the following all have in common?

    Trainers and architecture
    Fusion cooking
The theory of evolution and geology

    A. They’re all intersections that prompted innovative thinking.

    Keep connecting the dots.
  • Similar to Vikki’s really - I got into the advertising industry as a Creative Services Assistant (basically the liaison between client and designers). I tried to meet as many clients as possible and was eventually given opportunities to go to amazing places across the world and present to them, met some great people and saw very cool places.

I guess I did it by putting myself out there, even though it was outside of my job role and then being stubbornly persistent at it (ie consistently trying to get brought to client pitches and asking to be a part of them until eventually being allowed to lead them).
  • My best experiences are the most unexpected - I assumed as a copywriter, I’d never leave my desk but I’ve been lucky enough to travel all around the world for work. And go on shoots. And meet celebs - even royals!

My advice? Work hard and be nice to people: https://www.marketingsociety.com/the-library/work-hard-and-be-nice-people
