The opportunity
MA 3D Computer Animation at UAL’s London College of Communication is looking to recruit a specialist Lecturer in 3D Computer Animation. This course is part of the Moving Image and Digital Arts programme at London College of Communication.
The Lecturer in 3D Computer Animation will work collaboratively within a course team, deploying specialist expertise to develop the curriculum in innovative and critical directions. The post-holder is responsible for teaching, pedagogy, and on-going scholarship of the course and will work with students predominantly in-person, although there will be scope to teach online as and when the curriculum requires.
About you
We are looking for an outstanding educator, practitioner and/or researcher to join the MA 3D Computer Animation course team.
You should have experience in postgraduate education (or comparable industry experience), the ability to contribute to curriculum development and assessment, and a sound knowledge of the theories and practices of 3D Computer Animation. Ideally, you will also be able to contribute to the programme’s research and/or knowledge exchange profile.
You should be confident working with diverse cohorts of students and committed to a teaching approach that integrates theory and practice. You will engage students through a combination of innovative pedagogy, knowledge exchange and/or research. You should either hold, or be willing to work towards (with UAL’s support), a relevant teaching qualification or recognition. An MA in 3D Computer Animation or a closely related field is preferred, though not essential if you can demonstrate equivalent experience.
Candidates should possess a record of professional practice and/or research, with proficiency in 3D Computer Animation including, but not limited to: lighting, texturing, rendering, animation and compositing; concept design; character animation (including modelling, skinning and rigging); experimental animation techniques; experience using generative AI; and motion capture.
A comprehensive knowledge of 3D software and its applications is essential, particularly in tools such as Maya and Substance Painter. Proficiency in one or more of the following is highly desirable: Cinema 4D, Houdini, 3ds Max, Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity, ZBrush, MotionBuilder.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or interest in the creative and critical use of AI in 3D workflows—such as procedural generation, generative AI, AI-assisted rigging or motion design, or the integration of AI in various 3D pipeline or visual development.
You should be a specialist practitioner and/or researcher eager to use your academic and/or industry-based experience to support student development. You’ll be proactive, engaged with the contemporary context of 3D Computer Animation, and contribute to the programme’s aims and vision. You should be active in relevant networks and communities of practice within the field and/or closely related disciplines.
