A Dyslexia Simulation Book

  • Josie Hales

This project was completed as a group project in Part B, the aim was to redesign the poem book 'Cautionary Tales for Children', for adults. As a group we made the decision to target parents and guardians of dyslexic children. The layout of the text and images within the book simulates the difficulties of reading with dyslexic. The book enables our target audience to sympathise with the struggles that their dyslexic child/ren face daily.

The Dyslexia Awareness book uses a red filter to help demonstrate the difference between normal vision and the vision of a dyslexic person. The layout of the text and images simulates the difficulties that children with dyslexia have, allowing parents of dyslexic children to sympathise with the struggle’s dyslexia causes their children.

This concept stemmed from research and the idea that colour filters can help some people with dyslexia to read more easily due to the filters making it more easy to read due to minimising contrast. At the end of the book we have added a tips page, this offers parents and guardians advice and suggestions for how to support their child/ren with their reading.
As a group we worked really well together. Combining our skills and knowledge to create a well executed project. I contributed largely to the concept of the book, the use of the red filter and how to apply this. I also helped with the overall layout of the book and the typographic decisions. Below show some examples of the development of the layout and how it progressed into final pages.
