An Investigation of Conversation

  • Sarah Twelves

A self-initiated brief in order to explore conversation. I began experimenting by disrupting a typical face to face conversation, by having two people sit back to back, around corner and on opposite sides of the room whilst they spoke. With this being something I hadn’t seen done before, it prompted me to see how this could be visualised, where the format of typography felt appropriate to start with. From the conversation experiments, I began to focus on the subject of taboo and things that people aren’t particularly comfortable talking about, by getting people to talk about them! These experiments show a playful and interactive approach to design that forcefully intrudes our everyday lives in order to spark conversation and thoughts. From these, I began to think about what materials would work best to create a permanent installation that over time would become familiar, and when taken away would become the unfamiliar.
