Art on Postcard is working alongside Mick Rooney RA on a project which encompasses music and art. One of Mick’s submissions to the RA Summer Exhibition 2016 was a beautifully handcrafted ukulele, painted in his instantly recognisable rich, poetic style. The instrument opened Mick up to a world of ukulele enthusiasts and gave him the idea to create an orchestra of painted ukuleles. Mick has asked many of his peers as well as new and exciting emerging talent to paint one of 30 ukuleles each.
Pete Howlett, the UK’s foremost independent ukulele producer and the sole manufacturer for the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (UOGB) has made 8 ukuleles especially for the UOGB and we have a further 22 KALA ukuleles ready to be painted.
We will showcase the instruments at a charity performance with The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and some very special guests at The Jazz Cafe on September 12 before holding an event to auction them. The money raised will go to The Hepatitis C Trust.
On May 3 we launch our Art on a Ukulele crowdfunding campaign with phundee.com. We need to raise £6000 towards the production of this project. This is so much more than a fundraiser for The Hepatitis C Trust, it’s a way to connect with an audience who we would never normally be able to reach. Music and Art are powerful awareness raising tools. A project like this has more impact than thousands of leaflets or an expensive advert. We aim to enrich your soul and educate as many people in the process as possible.
