Arup: Designing an event identity for an ambitious development.

  • Catherine Booker

The Londoner is one of the most ambitious schemes ever to be developed in London's West End. Back in 2017 the first phase of the staggering construction project involved tunneling 30 metres deep below Leicester Square, creating a vast square hole in London’s urban landscape, clearly seen from above. On completion of this phase an official bottoming out ceremony was planned with engineering consultant Arup to celebrate. It was decided a booklet and large format presentation boards would be created to tell the story of the development so far to event attendees. For the identity a square device was developed to mirror the shape of the excavation. It became the key design element across all event materials being used as a receptacle for text, images and visualisations, drawing attention to the unique nature of the excavation.
