bieTPU [The Transposition Unit] (2019)

  • Kiara Ama Jade Callender

The TransPosition Unit is an interactive installation, which explores the role of mythology and politcal satire in storytelling. It is an indoctrination facility run by my fictional organisation, B.I.E., (Building Intelligence E-lliance), created based off of the FBI’s August 2017 report on their nation’s ‘biggest threat’: BIE (black identity extremists, a term they invented to describe black rights activists). Visitors are presented with 5 unlabelled dials that control the playback of an adjustable MAX/MSP MIDI keyboard, with a playlist of “brainwashing” political rap, old news clips about censorship, and other relevant documentaries through a multi-channel setup, allowing them to build new soundworlds and narratives. This creates the illusion of choice and autonomy in a pre-determined environment. The installation comprised of 7 foam orbs, transformed by transducers into resonant spheres. The foam was used due to its acoustic properties- it is also lightweight and easy to sculpt. Exhibited at NEST Gallery, The Hague.
