Bulgaria

Having spent the vast majority of my life living in Sofia, without actually ever feeling too Bulgarian, I’m now in the rather unique position of being able to simultaneously possess an implicit understanding of the mentality and mindset of Bulgarian society while also being able to regard it as an outsider looking in. That realisation inspired me to start working on a documentary project, aiming to detangle and provide a window into the EU’s poorest and most absurd state. These images were shot over the course of multiple trips there and constitute some of the archival material I'll be making use of for my next piece - a wall-based documentary work looking at the effects of urbanisation and later globalization on small agricultural communities in the Bulgarian north-west.
