These rules not only are affected by the type of ticket purchased by the customer but also depend upon the route as well as the flight to the destination.

Allowed baggage.
According to the piece system.
In the piece system of baggage allowance with Ethiopian airlines, the free baggage allowance is per bag. That means the passengers of business class can only carry either two pieces of 32 kg each for their checked-in baggage or three pieces of 23 kg each. While the economy class ticket only allows up to two pieces, of 23kg each. Remember that the maximum sum of the dimensions of these bags must be equal to 158 cm and not greater than that.
Economy class passengers are allowed check-in baggage of up to 2 pieces measuring 158 cm (62 in.) in dimensions. The maximum weight can be 23 kg (50 lbs.)
Business class passengers are allowed check in baggage of either;
- Up to 2 bags, each measuring 158 cm (62 in.) and 32 kg (70 lbs.) of weight.
- Or up to 3 bags of 23 kg each and dimensions equal 158 cm (62 in.)
According to the weight system.
In the weight system of free baggage allowance with Ethiopian Airlines, it will be in accordance with the provided guidelines by the airline per class of service(s) used. In other words, the code share flights’ free baggage allowance will be exactly as agreed with the partners but for Star Alliance members, the allowance would be 40 kg (first class), 30 kg (business class), and 20 kg (economy class). In this case, the total dimensions of each bag should not exceed the 158 cm (62 inches) limit.
For the weight system, economy class tickets allow the check-in baggage of;
- Up to 40 kg for the destinations of DOH, MCT, KWI, and BAH.
- Up to 46 kg for the destinations of KWI to KRT.
- Up to 20 kg for domestic flights.
On the other hand, the weight system for business class tickets allows;
- Up to 3 bags of 23 kg weight each.
- Domestic flight allowance is 30 kg.
Where to check your baggage weight?
The baggage allowance for your flight with Ethiopian airlines would be calculated according to either piece or weight system. However, it would greatly depend on the route you are planning to travel and the type of flight you are boarding.
So, only business class passengers are allowed to check in 3 bags for their check-in luggage and not the economy class passenger. Yet, the maximum weight of these bags should not exceed 23 kg per piece.
