China Covid policy expert says no timeline for easing by outlookindia4 com
Commentaries sent to state broadcaster China Central (CCTV) by the main players in China's new COVID-19 management policy suggested that China's "dynamic zero COVID" policy could continue beyond the first quarter of next year.

Liang Wenion, who has worked as head of the National Health Commission's Covid response expert team, said there was no timetable for policy easing after next year's so-called "two-session" meeting, in response to a specific question from a CCTV reporter.

It was a reference to the annual meeting of the country's legislative body, the National People's Congress, and to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body. The meetings are usually held in Beijing every March.

Two Macau scholars recently told GGRAsia that Chinese authorities show no sign of significantly easing the "dynamic zero-COVID" policy. According to one of them, the policy could last until next year and has the potential to have lasting effects on Macau's casino sector.

Chinese state media, including the People's Daily and Xinhua News Agency, recently published articles mentioning the need to stick to "dynamic zero-COVID."

The People's Daily editorial on the subject was titled "Don't lie down, don't lie down to win," referring to a Chinese proverb that says it takes patience to solve problems.

The term "dynamic" is understood to be a sign of mainland authorities that bulk testing and lockdowns are needed if necessary, but it is applied gradually depending on the timing and location of the outbreak.

Some investment analysts dealing with the Macau game have recently mentioned the possibility of the policy easing after the ruling Communist Party's National Congress, an event that begins in Beijing on Sunday.

In a CCTV interview broadcast on Wednesday, Liang, an epidemiologist and vice president of Tsinghua University's Banke School of Public Health in Beijing, said authorities could not commit to a set schedule for any policy changes.

Further work is needed for such measures to be reviewed, such as increasing the COVID-19 vaccination rate among older people, it added.

The Global Times, an English-language Chinese newspaper known for reporting updates on Chinese policy and what the Chinese leadership thinks, cited Lei Zhenglong, an official at the National Hygiene Commission, in an article on Wednesday, citing three "nails" regarding COVID-19 management.

Citing the official, the outlet pointed out that what China calls "anti-epidemic measures" "cannot be simplified, the risk areas cannot be expanded, and control measures cannot be replaced by static management."
