Collaborative Module | Protopia Virtual Exhibition

Virtual Exhibition This exhibition is on the ideal 'Protopia'. Explained by futurist. Kevin Kelly as 'a state better today than yesterday, although it might only be a little better.' Utopia's can be dangerous as they are a perfect world created for an imperfect species, the human race. When Utopia's are put into practice they can often lead to dystopian worlds; failed social experiments, repressive political regimes, and overbearing economic systems. (Quartz.com, 2018) Protopia is much much harder to visualises. Because protopia contains as many new problems as new benefits, this complex interaction of working and broken is very harder to predict. (Kevin Kelly, 2014) This exhibit aims to show examples of what a Protopian state could look like in cities across the world from Italy to Botswana, in order to visualise 'protopia' and show how it is a much safer ideal than Utopia. Each artist took pictures of derelict buildings from their chosen city in the world and added elements of utopian improvements in order to show how a better world can be created by improving what is already in this world rather than creating a new perfect one. My pieces of work were heavily influenced by Retrofuturism and Virtual Reality trends and themes.
