Enchanted by the mystique and wonder of seventeenth century cabinets of curiosities and the passion of natural history collectors, this contemporary collection of surface pattern designs responds to the tradition of accumulating natural specimens through expedition, trade and discovery.
A hand drawn and personal curation of imagery from such collections is developed into compositions for pattern designs. These hand drawn designs are translated into multi-layered repeat screen prints and laser etched samples. The contradiction between order and disorder shown in the cabinet’s categorisation of organic and novel natural form is explored through the clustered compositions of similar species in regulated patterns.
The colour palette has a nostalgic and classic feel as the combination of tones represents the academia and rich history associated with the cabinets.
