Data Matter is a collaborative research and design project conducted by ADS8 over the past year, involving a combination of individual design projects and a collective output.
The initial stages of research culminated in a collective installation exhibited in the Royal College of Art.
The installation featured audio-visual material reflecting on investigations into global data infrastructure and associated data practices such as surveillance and censorship and its implications for the human body, the home, the city and national and international structures.
The installation draws upon collective research into the environmental characteristics and architectural form of the data centre: a typology that is being reproduced at rapid speed all over the globe and increasingly becoming one of the most significant global economies. A space that is primarily designed for machines, it points towards a possible future where humans are no longer present in much of our architectural and urban structures.
