Digging for Victory

  • Joss Matthews

In 1939, World War II began. Shipping was needed for the war effort so food wasn’t being imported. Many shops had been bombed or their supply chains severely reduced so they had very little to sell. Rationing began and Britain was facing the possibility of starvation. The ‘Digging For Victory’ slogan was introduced by the government to encourage people who couldn’t join the army to contribute to the war effort by becoming food producers. Private and public land was then converted into allotments. This Project documents a few individuals within the community of The Tudor Allotment, South West London.
