Dissertation

My dissertation was a feminist critique of the story of Martha and Mary in the Gospel of Luke 10.38-42. It aimed to understand the interpretations of this passage throughout history, with a focus on St. Augustine’s influence and to understand the ways in which it became a tool for the oppression of women within the Church. The dissertation included sermons from the Early Modern period which use Luke 10.38-42, reviews of Diego Velazquez’s ‘Christ in the House of Martha and Mary’ and Pieter Aertsen’s ‘Christ in the House of Martha and Mary’ and finally, a chapter placing the story within its original historical, cultural and biblical contexts. It aimed to examine the story’s implications, the ways in which it has been used and whether it can be considered a feminist text.
