Cover design for a self-made magazine serves as a personal exploration into editorial illustration - what better lens to explore it than through food? Articles were cherry-picked by myself to allow me to draw a wide range of topics, tied together by food. I envisioned the magazine with Japanese stab binding, so I had to meticulously size the gutter to accommodate stitching and preserve content. I created dummy books, tested gutter dimensions, and assessed page layouts for reader balance. Given my work uses a lot of textures and colour, I conducted paper print tests to ensure alignment with my digital art. Despite little prior experience in magazine creation or bookbinding, the outcome matched my vision thanks to my thorough research and experimentation. It was especially important for me to source papers that felt both high quality and good for the environment, especially as some of the articles I included in the magazine were environment-focused.
