How could Google Hangouts bring football fans closer than ever to the club they love?
Manchester United has 650m fans worldwide, who are devoted to supporting the club - but less than 1% live in the UK, so very few get the chance to visit Old Trafford and show their support pitchside.
We developed an idea to allow fans to fulfill their dreams, and cheer the team on, even if they couldn't be there. We used Hangouts to turn the hoardings from a brand communication channel into a virtual front row for a world first during Manchester United vs Liverpool on March 16th.
On match day, pre-recruited superfans from all over the world could be seen, live, supporting their team at the pitchside, via Hangouts. The project transformed what it means to be a global sports fan, reaching over 100 million viewers across the world.
