FUN SPONGE

  • Jodie Allen

Oh, the mundane washing up sponge. An everyday object, scrubbed to a discoloured, disintegrating cuboid that we unquestionably assume is capable of cleaning our dishes. But there is something extraordinary that I discovered about sponges - something that we probably choose to ignore every day. My research focused on the millions of bacteria cells that reside on sponges. The prints you see are interpretations of salmonella, campylobacter and acinetobacter, printed via risograph. These prints ironically celebrate the germ riddled sponges with vibrant colours and fun design. And with the front of the packaging informing you of all of the germs available on sponges, the whole project brings an extraordinary light on, just how disgusting it is. Fun Sponge alert!
