In 2002 Digital Illusions CE a Stockholm based video games developer released Battle eld 1942, a WWII based rst-person shooter. Its wide success would lead to the development of the Battle eld series for the next ten years.
Using Frostbite 3, the latest game engine DICE developed, Battle eld 4 reaches a level of realism never seen before. Lighting e ects and sound design simulate war combat in such an e cient manner that it has been reported the game can trigger ashbacks on war veterans su ering from posttraumatic stress disorder.
One of the most striking features of the game engine is its ability to imitate wonderful scenery and breathtaking landscapes.
By actually reproducing real world locations, the developer experiments with the concept of simulacra and takes to an entirely virtual world the theory of hyperreality.
By ying around in the game’s designed levels with a helicopter it is possible to take screenshots that typically simulate landscape photography.
This is a selection of di erent views I collected as an explorer in the virtual world of Battle eld 4.
