Interactive Installation for Magnetic North

  • Dan Webb

An interactive, spatial based installation informed by a continued interest in decay and surface texture. This multi-media installation was produced for a collaborative event with the electronic music promoter 'Magnetic North' for their first audiovisual resident DJ party. I collaborated with the director of Magnetic North on this new concept for their parties to produce an alternative and inclusive space that we felt was representative of our interests and surroundings, aiming to appeal to wider audiences than the existing music and art scene already in the city. After finding the appropriate venue, a space within an old paper factory in Sheffield, I developed the concept and began experimenting with materials and designing a piece to fit the space accordingly. Industrial, non-art materials such as cement and plaster were applied to fabric, creating a range of surface qualities which through visual feedback informed the projected imagery. I worked closely with Sheffield based projection/new media artist Aaron Mears who technically assisted the project through the use of projection mapping.
